When I was a boy growing up in central California we had an enormous cherry tree in our back yard, truly legendary in size. Full of life and beauty. Once a year a migrant family would come, in a well used but sturdy open bed pick-up truck, an old gentleman at the wheel with the whole family loaded in the cab and bed. They’d quickly go to work putting up ladders and crawling all over the tree, harvesting all the cherries. 100% organic, lush, ripe cherries. My mom would make sandwiches and kool-aid, and coffee for the grown-ups. We’d visit as they worked. By mid-day they’d be finished. They’d leave us with two grocery bags full of cherries. And they drove away with a truckload of family and cherries, the trucks bed stuffed with both.
